Doreen generously donated her body to science in hopes of helping others. In keeping with her wishes, no formal services will be held.
Doreen Sue Spoo, daughter of Wayne and Loretta (Galvin) Haukoos, was born on March 5, 1957, in Estherville, Iowa. She was raised in Estherville and graduated from Estherville Lincoln Central High School.
In 1978, Doreen married Kenneth Spoo at Fort Defiance State Park in Estherville. Later that year, they moved to Spencer, and in 1992 they made their final move to Hartley, which they happily called home.
Doreen was known as a dependable and hardworking woman throughout her life. She worked as a Certified Nurse Assistant at Longhouse Nursing Home (SPARC) for more than 28 years. She also worked at St. Luke’s Nursing Home for three years. Being a CNA was a natural fit for Doreen, as she truly had a heart for others. She never met a stranger, had a gift for conversation, and enjoyed connecting with people.
As long as she was able, Doreen loved riding horses and spending time outdoors. She appreciated sunny days but also gentle rains and moments of reflection. Whether in small details or bold choices, orange was her favorite color and was always a fitting reflection of her joyful heart. Her greatest joy came from time spent with her family. She especially cherished “Game Days” with her grandchildren, filled with board games, laughter, and togetherness.
Doreen passed away on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at the age of 68, in Spencer, Iowa. In a final act of generosity, she donated her body to science in hopes of helping students at the University of Iowa further their education. She was preceded in death by her father and her sisters, Debra and Denise.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Spoo of Hartley; her son, Aaron Spoo of Sheldon; her daughter, Alison (Jay) Pauley of Sheldon; four grandchildren, Raine, Riley, Emery, and Gauge; sisters, Darla (Mike) Pytleski of Gruver, Iowa, and DeEtta Koen of Estherville, Iowa; her brother, David (Michelle) Haukoos of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and many other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.
