George Joseph Kliegl, son of John and Margaret (Conway) Kliegl, was born on April 29, 1931, on the farm in Vernon Township in Palo Alto County. His education began at the County Elementary School until he completed the eighth grade. His education continued at the Emmetsburg Catholic High School until his graduation in May of 1950.
Following high school, George remained at home to help his father on the family farm until he answered the call to serve. On February 18, 1953, he entered the United States Army. After completing basic training, he was assigned to the Eighth Army Headquarters, where he was granted clearance to manage secret documents related to the Korean War. On December 16, 1954, George was honorably discharged. In recognition of his service, he was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
On February 21, 1955, George was united in marriage to Evelyn Neary at Assumption Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. Together they made their home in Emmetsburg, where they raised their six children.
George began his career working for the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service and later for the Chicago & North Western Railroad at various locations. He went on to serve the people of Palo Alto County as Deputy County Auditor for 15 years. After being elected County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections, George faithfully served in that role for another 20 years until his retirement in 1992.
He was a devoted parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church, a member of VFW Post #2295 and Knights of Columbus Council #936 all in Emmetsburg. In his younger years, George enjoyed dancing with Evelyn as well as hunting, and fishing. He loved to get together with friends to play Euchre at the VFW and Shores. One of his biggest passions came after his retirement when he picked up the game of golf. His hole in one on Hole #6 in Emmetsburg was a proud moment for him.
George passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg at the age of 94. He was preceded in death by his parents; and 11 brothers and sisters, Opal, Teresa, Robert, Josephine, Virginia, Marjorie, Gertrude, John, Ellen, Larry, and Joseph.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Evelyn Kliegl and their six children, Ann of Ruthven, Bill of Emmetsburg, Carolyn of Forest City, Dan (Jill) of Emmetsburg, Art (Natalie) of Holstein, and Mary of Emmetsburg; 15 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. His jokes, one-liners, and ability to put a smile on your face will be missed by many.
