Janet Sue Heikens of Spencer passed peacefully in her sleep on June 28, 2026 with her husband of 37 years, George Moriarty, by her side. Janet was born on February 4, 1941 and grew up on a farm northwest of Spencer.
She was very intelligent, dedicated, and hardworking. Janet was known to her family and caregivers as sassy and independent. She will be missed by many that loved her.
Janet graduated at 16 from Spencer High School and her love for animals took her to Iowa State where she studied pre-veterinary medicine for two years. She returned to the farm to raise hogs, do other farm work, and prepare corporate and individual income tax filings for more than 41 years. During that time, she upgraded her farrowing house with automated systems and raised more than 100 hogs each year on her own.
In her spare time, Janet loved playing golf. She and George often played mixed doubles together, and it became a hobby they both greatly enjoyed. Janet's doubles partner was Jane Black, and together they were club champions for two consecutive years.
A loving daughter, she cared for her parents during her mother's battle with early onset Alzheimer's, continuing to live on the farm until she married George in 1989. She then moved to town where the two had a successful tax and accounting business for decades.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews who have fond memories of time with her on the farm and at the Clay County Fair in later years. She enjoyed her extended family via George's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother Gertie Heikens (n. Eeten) in 1984 and by her father Merle Heikens in 1990. She was also preceded in death by her brother Marvin (d. 2005) and sister Marilyn Wilson of Northglenn, Colorado (d. 2009).
