Sarah was born on January 1, 1991, in Jefferson, Iowa, to Stephen and Carol (Perkins) Schrum. She was raised on the family farm near Dana and graduated from Ogden High School. The youngest of four, she walked beans and did chores alongside her siblings, took family vacations to New York State, and patiently covered her eyes while her big sister stacked the UNO deck on family game night. Her childhood was filled with 4-H, afternoons at the bowling alley, sleepovers with friends, Little League, and High School Jazz Band competitions. Sarah attended Iowa State University for two years before earning her bachelor's degree in Human Services and Psychology from Grand View University.
It was at Iowa State where Sarah met her future husband, Scott Smith, who attempted to show her a few dance moves at a party. They were later married at Zion Lutheran Church in Ogden, Iowa, and together they made their home near Curlew on Scott's family farm. Sarah and Scott were blessed with three sons, who were the light of her life.
Sarah embraced life on the farm with joy and dedication. She was always willing to lend a hand-whether driving the grain cart, preparing meals for the harvest crew, or heading out on a parts run. Her role on the farm wasn't just one of support; she truly enjoyed the daily rhythm of farm and took pride in the life they built together.
Sarah had a passion for life and poured herself into her family and community. Running was one of her favorite hobbies. She enjoyed everything from the more serious "Dam to Dam" half-marathon to the more lighthearted "Around the Loch" St. Patrick's Day Race. She often raced alongside her close friends, making memories with each mile. She loved being a proud "boy mom" and would sometimes gather items from the shed or mow the lawn in a special pattern to create obstacle courses for the boys, a surprise that never failed to amuse Scott when he got home. She would connect with her boys at their level, often crouching down to whisper with them and balance their energy with patience and thoughtfulness.
Sarah was actively involved in the Partners in Education (P.I.E.) and played a key role in organizing trivia nights, which she especially loved. In quieter moments, she enjoyed reading and treasured being part of her ladies' book club. She also loved to travel-whether skiing with Scott, exploring the Great Smoky Mountains with Jess's family, going on the Smith family trip to Osakis, or simply driving around the region to support her nieces and nephews in their activities.
Sarah was a compassionate, patient, and loyal wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. She was often the one friends and family members turned to first to talk through a problem or share a new milestone. Sarah was always ready to lend a hand at a moment's notice, often knowing what her loved one needed before they did.
She is survived by her husband, Scott Smith; three sons, Danny, Rhett, and Jacob; her parents, Stephen and Carol Schrum of Grand Junction, Iowa; her brothers, Michael (Kelly) Schrum of Ogden and Dan (Mattie) Schrum of Boone; her sister, Jessica (Troy) Kunz of Norwalk; her father- and mother-in-law, Glen and Diane Smith of Emmetsburg; her sister-in-law, Rachel (Chafik) Barbar of Omaha, Nebraska; nieces and nephews, Calvin, Carly, Maggie, Bryn, Case, Alaina, Malia, Nora, Lina, and Jude. She is also survived by Laura (Joe) Klaes of Osage, Iowa, a close friend who became family through marriage, Silo, her beloved dog, and many extended family members and dear friends who will miss her deeply.
